A day at Sand Lake

July 19th, 2008

 Keri pulling her friend.

A while back we were asked to shoot Keri’s 26th birthday out at Sand Lake.  She has been parasailing for some years and never really had any photos taken.  We were up to a new experience, so we headed out there not really knowing what to expect.

I have seen parasailing before in Cabo; people being pulled by boats.  Keri said that she pulled her parasail with her truck.  The question was how to shoot this best.  Should we be in the back of a truck or standing on the side?  Should/could we use a flash?  I had hoped to put a flash on the back of the person up in the air and highlight the parasail.

We decided on the back of the truck; that way we could get photos from start to finish of each run.  Not knowing what the rules of the lake were we observed people around us and it seemed like a lawless land.  People were riding ATVs without helmets, people in the back of pickup trucks and so on; all along the park rangers just sitting in thier trucks watching.

Well after warming up with two runs down the beach we headed in for lunch.  During lunch I formulated ideas that could be used.  After lunch we head back out, but then the trouble started.  The sheriff was now here in force.  We ended up getting pulled over for having people in the back of the truck.  They said the beach was considered Oregon Highway and that it was illegal to have anyone in the back of the truck on Oregon Highway.  We got off with a warning, fixed out seating arrangement and were off again.  Now we were parasailing again and after a second run we got pulled over again.  This time we were told that it was illegal to parasail on the beach; funny how the park rangers watched in the morning and said nothing about it.  Our day was ended with another warning.

Moral of the story is to know the laws and just because the park rangers are not doing anything doesn’t mean it isn’t illegal.  Here is a slideshow of some of the fun before it got shut down.  In the end, I never did get to put a flash on the back of a person. Thank you to the Sheriff’s office for letting us off with warnings.  [more…]

This week I came to the race with on shot it mind.  High contast face shots that would encluded enough of the bike for people to see what the subject was doing.  I was hoping for more harsh sun light to have a the subjects back but instead was given a slightly overcast day that difused the sun light.  Check out our slideshow of the hightlights or click here to see all of our photos from the race. Josh racing sport

Another great day for mountain bike racing.  Today my goal was to capture everyone in a portait style photo.  I usually use a wide angle lense but decided to pull out the 70-200.  This is pretty much the standard in sport shooting lens and it is easy to fall in love with.  You can find all of our photos here or click on slideshow to see of some of the highlights.  [more…]

Velo on the Volcano

Our photos have been posted of June 18th’s Velo on the Volcano at Mt. Tabor.  It was a beautiful night to be racing and taking photos.  My goal for the night was to capture the intensity that the riders have.  I attempted to achieve this by using slow shutter speed, underexposing the background and lighting the rider just enough.  Since I don’t control where the riders are on the road, you will find some images brighter and others darker.  To see a slideshow of the hightlights click on more. Yakima’s Big Wheel

We have been neglecting our blog, but it doesn’t mean we haven’t been out taking photos.  A few weeks back we were the official photographers for the New Belgium Urban Assualt Ride here in Portland.  We saw a lot of people out having wacky fun on their bikes.  We even saw some local racers like Team Beer and Doug Ollerenshaw.  You can see a slideshow of our highlights by clicking more or see all of our photos of the event.  [more…]
